Guide
What still works on Ring without Ring Protect (2026)
Every Ring doorbell and camera keeps Live View and real-time alerts with no plan, but none of them save video. Here's exactly what you keep, what you lose, and what the cheapest plan costs, from Ring's own pages.
The short answer
- You keep: Live View for up to 10 minutes at a time [S2], and real-time alerts you can answer as they happen [S1]. Ring's product FAQs add that the Ring Dashboard shows "the image last captured by active devices" [S5].
- You lose: every recording. Ring says "A subscription is required to review recorded video on your cameras and doorbells" and that "Events are only recorded after you subscribe" [S1]. Ring's FAQ also says you can't save or share videos or images without a plan [S5].
- Cheapest fix: Ring Solo at $4.99/month or $49.99/year for one device, or Ring Multi at $9.99/month or $99.99/year for every device at one location [S3].

The free trial, and what happens when it ends
- Ring says a free 30-day Ring Protect trial starts when you set up a new or certified refurbished device, unless your location already has a plan [S1][S3].
- If you don't subscribe before the trial or plan ends, Ring says you lose your stored recordings and they can't be retrieved [S3]. Download anything you want to keep first.

Common questions
Can I use a Ring doorbell or camera without a subscription?
Yes. Ring says that without a subscription you can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen, but a subscription is required to review recorded video [S1].
How long can I watch Live View without a plan?
Ring says Live View runs up to 10 minutes at a time [S2]. Extended Live View, up to 30 minutes, is a plan feature [S3].
Do Ring cameras have an SD card for local recording?
None of the Ring doorbells and cameras we cover list a memory card or local recording option in their tech specs. Ring says recorded events are stored in its cloud with a subscription [S1].
